About us

Nauru Meteorological Services (NMS)

Establishment
Nauru Meteorological Services (NMS) was established in 11th May, 2015 to address the island's growing need for accurate weather forecasting and climate monitoring. It was founded as a response to the vulnerability of Nauru, a small Pacific island nation, to weather extremes and climate variability.

Administrative Framework
NMS operates under the umbrella of National Emergency Services (NES), a broader governmental structure tasked with ensuring public safety and preparedness. Alongside NMS, NES includes the Nauru Fire Department, Nauru Life Guard, National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), and the Ambulance Services. Together, these agencies collaborate to safeguard the island's residents against natural and human-made hazards.

Goals and Aims of Nauru Meteorological Services

  1. Weather and Climate Monitoring:
NMS aims to provide accurate, real-time weather forecasts and climate data to support daily activities and decision-making across various sectors, including fishing, aviation, and agriculture.

  2. Disaster Preparedness and Risk Reduction:
The service plays a crucial role in issuing early warnings for extreme weather events such as tropical cyclones, heavy rainfall, and droughts. These warnings help mitigate the impacts of disasters on lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

  3. Support for Climate Change Adaptation:
As a member of the Pacific Meteorological Council (PMC) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), NMS actively contributes to regional and global efforts in climate monitoring, modeling, and adaptation planning.

  4. Capacity Building and Community Engagement:
NMS works to raise public awareness about weather and climate issues, emphasizing preparedness and resilience. It also seeks to build capacity within its team by training forecasters and technicians and adopting modern technologies.

  5. Sustainability and Development:
The service aligns its objectives with Nauru’s national sustainable development strategies, ensuring that meteorological insights support long-term planning and economic stability.

Achievements

  1. Enhanced Forecasting Capabilities:
Over the decades, NMS has significantly improved its forecasting accuracy by integrating satellite data, automated weather stations, and partnerships with regional meteorological centers like SPREP (Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme).

  2. Introduction of Early Warning Systems:
The implementation of early warning systems for cyclones, floods, and droughts has reduced the loss of life and damage to property.

  3. Regional Contributions:
NMS has been an active participant in regional meteorological initiatives, helping to advance the understanding of Pacific climate systems. It has also contributed to research on sea-level rise and its impact on small island nations.

  4. Community Outreach:
Through education campaigns and workshops, NMS has strengthened community preparedness, ensuring that residents understand how to respond to weather advisories effectively.

Nauru Meteorological Services continues to play a vital role in ensuring the safety and resilience of Nauru’s population. By combining traditional knowledge, modern science, and collaborative partnerships, it addresses the unique challenges of a small island developing state in a changing climate.
